3 Ways to Prepare for Back to School with Children’s Books

As summer winds down, it is time to prepare for your child to head back to school. The summer was filled with vacations, family visits, and plenty of outside time soaking up the sun; you may not have spent a lot of time focused on schoolwork or reading. Preparing to get back into the routine of the school year might feel a little daunting, but by incorporating books and reading throughout the rest of your summer the transition will be much easier!

Here are some ways to use books to prepare your child to be ready to go back to school:

  1. Plan time to visit your local library, or bookstore – Throughout the summer you might have spent a lot of time traveling, and visiting various places. Incorporate visits to your local library, or book store, as one of your family outings occasionally. Not only does it give you a break from the heat and sun, but it will reinforce the importance of reading in a fun way.
  2. Read books related to your summer activities – As a family, you can read books related to your family’s summer adventures. For example, if you visited a national park you can find books that talk about the national parks. As you read, you can reflect on things you all enjoyed about your trip. This helps to connect real life experiences to what they are reading.
  3. Slowly work in reading time into your family routineStart with 15 minutes of “quiet time” where your child can sit and enjoy a book independently. Slowly increase the minutes over time. Reading is also a great way to help a child wind down at the end of the night, so consider reading a book with them before bed during your nighttime routine
  4. BONUS: Have a virtual book party – Looking for ways to stock your bookshelves before the start of the new school year? Go through a virtual book party planner (like us!) to plan a Back To School Bash for you and your friends! This is a great way to learn about new titles and earn some free books as a host. Getting your child focused on the upcoming school year doesn’t have to be a struggle. If you make reading a part of your family’s daily summer activities, the transition can be much easier. Choose books that allow your child to think about all the fun adventures you have had throughout the summer, so that they do not even realize you are preparing them for back to school!
