Diversity for Kids
Diversity within the Black community is not a mainstream topic, especially diversity for kids within the Black community. It is mostly whispered about upon family or worse– as a bullying tactic amongst our youth. When I first came across Kimberly’s book, I knew it was something that needed to be shared with our young girls I came across.
From differences in skin tone, to hair texture, and even shapeliness– young Black girls will face different levels of opposition throughout school and maybe into adulthood. Books like Kimberly Davis-Peter‘s can help us to model self-acceptance, the importance of bonding through diversity, and what friendship SHOULD look like.
Cocoa, Tea & Honey is a story of three friends, each a different shade of beautiful brown skin. This is a celebratory children’s book that focuses on friendship, kindness and acceptance of self and others.
The author, Kimberly Davis-Peters, tells us all about the inspiration behind her book in this episode. As a mother of a young Black daughter, author Davis-Peters realized how most children’s books lacked diversity. Wanting a different experience from her own growing up for her daughter Ellie, Kimberly utilized a common occurrence for parents as inspiration for her debut children’s book, “Ellie & The Rainy Day.” What could have been another boring rainy day indoors turned into a fun and creative experience for Kimberly and Ellie. After the success of “Ellie & The Rainy Day,” Kimberly decided to create more books with young Black and Brown children as the intended audience. From there ‘Cocoa, Tea & Honey’ was born!
