Three Tips for Read-Alouds
- If it’s a well-loved book that is requested over and over, make it fresh each time for yourself! Find something new about the story that can spark your excitement. When you get excited, your child will be more likely to get excited too! You could look for something new in the illustrations, like maybe a colour theme. Or maybe you could try to connect more emotionally with a certain character!
- If the child is losing interest, surprise them! Ask them a question about the story. Ask them what they would do in the character’s shoes. Get them to find something in the illustration. Start talking in a silly voice! There are endless ways to bring focus back to the story!
- Allow your imaginations to really take off! Go with the flow and let yourself be a kid again. Maybe you dress up as the characters before reading. If it’s a story you both know well, maybe you act out a part of the story together. Or it could be as simple as asking your child what they sense (see, hear, smell, taste, touch) with different lines. Sky is the limit when it comes to imagination!
