By a Certified Family Life Educator
This course is for you if
- “Some nights I’m just trying to get through the book.”
- “I say, ‘Oh, that happened to you too,’ and then that’s it.”
- “I just read the book and answer whatever she asks.”
- “Something new is going on with my kid, and I’m not sure how to find the words.”
- “Just tell me what to do while I’m reading.”
You’re already reading together. This course shows you how to go deeper.
Most reading advice is about skills. This course is about the two of you: what to notice, what to share, and how to listen while the book is open.
What you’ll learn
Seven things books can do.

Reading with Multi-Age FamiliesIncluded with your course
Watch a sample
A little detail.
A familiar connection.

From the page to their world.
One minute from the Notice lesson. Watch how Quinn starts with something familiar to the child.
Then try it tonight
Look at one page in a book you have. What reminds you of your child?
What parents and professionals say
What stayed with them.
“I read a lot of parenting books, and I often end up feeling inadequate and like achieving ‘good’ parenting is impossible. Not with this!As I listened to each section, it was like I was being wrapped in a warm, knowledgeable hug.”
“It helps them slide into this process free of judgement and teaches them how to fully be present with their child.”
“I almost cried because this made me realize I don’t say it nearly enough.”
Who’s guiding you
I did the research,
so you don’t have to.
I’m Quinn Cummings: a Certified Family Life Educator, a children’s book author, a two-time bookseller, and a mom.
This course puts what I learned from child development and family life research, from real families in my community, and from the read-alouds I lead virtually, in community centers, and in classrooms, into short lessons you can use tonight.
About parent guilt
Guilt is loud. We don’t feed it.
What guilt might be telling you“I should be reading every night.”
What guilt might be telling you“Other parents do the voices. I just want it to be over.”
What guilt might be telling you“They’re too old now. I missed my chance.”
What guilt might be telling you“If they don’t love books, that’s on me.”
What guilt might be telling you“I’m too tired to do this right.”
01 / 05
There’s no quota here.
Reading together isn’t a test you’re behind on. Pick up a book when it fits, and give it your full attention.
We don’t count nights or minutes.
02 / 05
Wanting it over means it became a task.
This course gives you something to look for on every page, so the book stops feeling like a chore. No performance required.
We don’t grade how you read.
03 / 05
There’s no age cutoff.
Plenty of kids still want you to read at 12, and at 16. The lessons and the teen guide show how reading together changes as kids grow, not how it ends.
We don’t tell you it’s too late.
04 / 05
This isn’t about making a reader.
It’s about knowing your child. Some kids come to love books later. Some never do. You can still meet them inside a story.
We don’t hand out report cards, for you or your child.
05 / 05
There is no “right.”
One page, one question, one minute counts. Missed a week? Pick up at the next book. Nothing resets.
We don’t use countdowns, fake deadlines, or guilt hooks.

Before you enroll
A few questions, answered.
I already know reading aloud matters. What’s new here?
Most advice stops at “read every day.” This course shows you what to do with the book in your hands: what to notice, what to share, and what to ask, page by page.
I’m exhausted at bedtime. How much time does this take?
The lessons are short. Most are under 12 minutes. After that, nothing gets added to your day. You’ve heard “20 minutes a day.” The minutes matter less than what happens in them. And it doesn’t have to be bedtime. Once you know what to look for, a book fits whenever it fits: breakfast, the car line, a slow Saturday.
What if my child won’t sit still or answer?
I built this with a kid who never sat still. You go first, and your child is invited to join, never required. A quiet answer still counts. The course covers kids who move, interrupt, or need a few pages at a time.
What ages is this for?
Babies to teens. The lessons show how each idea changes as your child grows. Two bonus guides cover reading with teens and reading with kids of different ages at once. Your child does not need to read on their own.

More questionsWe’ve been doing this a while. Here are the others parents ask.
Will this teach my child to read, or get them reading on their own?
No. This is not a phonics or reading-skills course, and it won’t turn a reluctant reader into an independent one. If your child is learning to read, keep working with their teacher. This course is about the time you spend together with a book open.
My child wants the same book every night. Will this help?
Yes. That’s where this works best. Each time through, there’s a new way in: something new to notice, a story of yours to share, a new ending to imagine. The book stays the same. What happens between you changes.
Can a book really compete with screens?
Not if reading means just turning pages. This course turns it into “let’s get to know each other.” Your full attention is the one thing a screen can’t give your child.
I don’t do voices, and I’m not a strong reader.
You don’t need either. Ask your child how a character should sound and let them pick. Getting a voice wrong becomes part of the fun. Pace and where you sit matter more than acting. Your child wants you, not a performance.
Do I need special books?
No. Use books you own or borrow from the library. The course shows you how to find a way in with any book.
When will I see a difference?
There’s no magic timeline, and we won’t pretend there is. You’ll finish the first lesson with something to try at your next book. Closeness builds the way it always does: one book at a time.
Is this based on research?
Yes. ENGAGE draws on research in child development, family life, and shared reading, and specialists reviewed the lessons. The method has not been tested in its own study yet, so we call it research-informed, not evidence-based. Read about the research.
How do I watch, and how long do I have access?
Stream the lessons on your phone, tablet, or computer. Lessons have captions. You keep lifetime access to the videos.
Your next book is waiting
What if tonight’s book
felt different?
Less rushing to the last page. More of your child, and more of you.
