My Child Won’t Sit Still for Story Time. What Can I Do?

Your child moves, flips pages, or walks away mid-book. Try reading where they play, adding movement, and sharing one page at a time.

· 2 min read

You picture it: your child tucked in beside you, quiet, listening. Then real life. They flip ahead. They climb on you. They grab the book. They walk away after two pages.

I know this one well. My son never sat still. I built the way I read with him around that fact, not against it.

Sitting still is not required

Many of us carry a picture of what reading time is “supposed” to look like. Calm child. Quiet room. Whole book, start to finish.

The point is the two of you, sharing a story. A child who moves can still listen. An interruption may be something they want to share.

Try this tonight: start where they are

Sit down and start reading out loud where they’re already playing. On the floor or at the kitchen table.

Give them room to come closer or keep playing. If they don’t want to listen, you can stop and try another time.

Try this tomorrow: let the story move

Invite them to move with the story. If a character jumps, jump. If it rains, drum your fingers on the book. If someone tiptoes, whisper.

You don’t need to act. Just let your voice and body follow the story a little. Movement can be part of the reading.

Read a page, not a book

Some nights, one page is the whole thing. Read the page they flipped to. Talk about the picture they’re pointing at. Close the book when they’re done.

If finding a book they want to share is part of the challenge, see books for reluctant readers. Moving during a story does not by itself mean a child dislikes books.

Your child is invited, never required

In The ENGAGE Method®, the parent goes first, and the child is invited to join. Never forced. You can adapt the reading to a child who moves, interrupts, or wants only a few pages.

Want the rest?

The ENGAGE Method®: Connect Through Reading is a self-paced course for parents. Ten short video lessons show you what to notice, what to share, and what to ask while you read together. Your child doesn’t have to sit still to take part. $79. Lifetime access. 30-day refund.
